The computer revolution has
completely transformed the world of translation. As computers and
programming have advanced in power and complexity, the tools available
to translators have improved greatly as well.
These tools include Machine Translation
and Translation Memory tools. Beyond these, the Internet
has become an indispensable research and information resource and
communication medium for translators.
Machine translation (MT) involves the use of
programs which produce draft translations of a document. The programs
are written to recognize rules of grammar, parts of speech, and
multiple word meanings. They analyze the source sentence using a
variety of criteria and attempt to construct a corresponding equivalent
in the target language. Human editors are then required to put the
raw translation into a smooth, literate form.
Translation Memory is the approach that we favor
at Global. Translation Memory (TM) programs are databases containing
matched source and target texts. The program compares a source text
to the existing database. It then checks whether the sentence or
a similar phrase exists in the database, and suggests it to the
user as a possible translation. TM programs can be used to compile
customer-specific databases of translations and terminology, which
maintain the consistency of future translation and make faster,
more accurate, and more economical updates possible.
Some of the popular translation memory programs include Deja Vu and Trados/SDL.
In addition to utilizing the latest translation
tools, today's translators must also be able to work in a variety
of document formats. To meet our customers' needs, we handle files
in MS Word®, WordPerfect®, Interleaf®, PageMaker®, FrameMaker®,
electronic publishing formats and more.
Other important advances have been made in file
transfer technology. To ensure problem-free receipt and delivery,
Global supports electronic file transfer via e-mail attachment,
FTP transfer, CD-ROM, and
DVD ROM. Upload options are available via our web site.
Global is committed to keeping pace with the
latest technology, in order to facilitate every step of the process
and provide our clients with the best translation possible.
